Tuesdays with Abraham

Read Genesis 24:5-7 – And the servant said to him, “Perhaps the woman will not be willing to follow me to this land. Must I take your son back to the land from which you came?” But Abraham said to him, “Beware that you do not take my son back there. TheLord God of heaven, who took me from my father’s house and from the land of my family, and who spoke to me and swore to me, saying, ‘To your descendants I give this land,’ He will send His angel before you, and you shall take a wife for my son from there… ” (NKJV)

While Abraham’s life was filled with uncertain steps, he knew he was on a mission. God had called him to a new place and a new future, separated from the paths of his ancestors, but when it came time for Isaac to have a wife, Abraham knew his son would need someone with the character of his family to share his journey. Do you live your life on a mission? Do you make your decisions based on where you’re going, rather than simply where you’re at? I’ve frequently told my sons to find your path and then find your friends on that path. Don’t let important decisions be the product of temporary places, but live purposely with determination. Abraham knew that Isaac would need the woman that Rebekah would become. His insistence that the servant find such a woman demonstrates Abraham’s commitment to God’s plan and his hope that Isaac would live with that same determination.
