Read 1 Samuel 22:16-17 – And the king said, “You shall surely die, Ahimelech, you and all your father’s house!” Then the king said to the guards who stood about him, “Turn and kill the priests of the Lord, because their hand also is with David, and because they knew when he fled and did not tell it to me.” But the servants of the king would not lift their hands to strike the priests of the Lord. (NKJV)
Saul challenges Ahimelech’s loyalty. The latter has questioned Saul’s pursuit of David, pointing out that David has done a lot for Saul and shown no evidence of treason against him. But the real issue is Saul’s unwillingness to trust anyone. He has become paranoid in his bitterness and accuses everyone around him in the preceding verses. This is what a bad attitude ultimately becomes. Friends are perceived as enemies. The innocent are accused for their normal actions. The wrong heart is in Saul, not Ahimelech. Leaders who fear they are losing authority or prestige can become suspicious even of their friends.
