Read 1 Samuel 22:1-2 – David therefore departed from there and escaped to the cave of Adullam. So when his brothers and all his father’s house heard it, they went down there to him. And everyone who was in distress, everyone who was in debt, and everyone who was discontented gathered to him. So he became captain over them. And there were about four hundred men with him. (NKJV)
David’s collection of misfits proves to be a blessing of diversity, but one wonders the nature of their initial connection with him. A leader tends to draw those around him who fit best with him. Another statement says that people get the leader they deserve. Could this mean that David’s own discontent or distress is dominating this point in his life? Whether David’s crowd reveals any struggles or not remains unclear, but the question is a good one for us to consider. What does our “crowd” say about us? Are we surrounded by the discontent? Have we made friends with the unhappy? Often our crowd can say a lot about where we’re at in our own journey. It seems likely that David’s ability to fit anywhere fits these guys. He is in their same shoes. You can tell much about a leader by observing those closest to him.
