Read 1 Samuel 19:4-7 – Thus Jonathan spoke well of David to Saul his father, and said to him, “Let not the king sin against his servant, against David, because he has not sinned against you, and because his works have been very good toward you. For he took his life in his hands and killed the Philistine, and the Lord brought about a great deliverance for all Israel. You saw it and rejoiced. Why then will you sin against innocent blood, to kill David without a cause?” So Saul heeded the voice of Jonathan, and Saul swore, “As the Lord lives, he shall not be killed.” Then Jonathan called David, and Jonathan told him all these things. So Jonathan brought David to Saul, and he was in his presence as in times past. (NKJV)
In this part of the story, Jonathan’s effort to intercede for David has short-term success. Saul’s fear of David hasn’t boiled over to the point that he can no longer occasionally escape it. Unfortunately, Jonathan’s verbal victory will be short-lived. This part of the story reminds me that victories of the head are not victories of the heart. Those that have given their heart to fear will seldom fully turn from its destructive path. It’s a good lesson for all of us. When we live in fear, we become chained to the conclusions that fear drives us toward. Many people live in fear of lost jobs, lost relationships and lost meaning for their lives. Sadly, those fears can be self-fulfilling as we choose to live like they are already a reality. Don’t let fear take the best things from your life.
