Tuesdays with Abraham

Read Genesis 14:18-20 – Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine; he was the priest of God Most High. And he blessed him and said: “Blessed be Abram of God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth; And blessed be God Most High, Who has delivered your enemies into your hand.” And he gave him a tithe of all. (NKJV)

Shortly after Abram’s victory, he encounters the opportunity to acknowledge God with acts of worship. Abram knows that his own strength hasn’t been the sole reason for his victory. On the contrary, God has been on his side and honored His promises to Abram. So Abram responds in worship. He presents a tithe (a tenth) of all he has and refuses to seek riches for himself in this moment. While there are mysteries in this story, like the identity of Melchizedek and his connection to Abram, one thing is clear. Abram knew that his victory had come from the Lord. We should see our victories in that same way. He is our Champion and we should celebrate our victories with worship to the God who gives them.
