Deuteronomy 15:7

Scripture:

Deuteronomy 15:7 (ESV) “If among you, one of your brothers should become poor, in any of your towns within your land that the Lord your God is giving you, you shall not harden your heart or shut your hand against your poor brother…”

Observation:

The fundraiser was one of the things I liked doing the best on the fire department. Each year, we would grab our fire boots and head out to the nearest intersection to ask the community for donations. Maybe you've seen us out there, too. It's call "Fill the Boot!" Today's verse shares about giving to the poor.  Each year, firefighters across the country, do a campaign for the needy in their particular districts. “Fill the Boot!” was created to help those in need. Knowing that we were making a difference in the lives of those who have fallen on hard times can warm your heart. Many people would give as they passed us by, but a few would yell for us to get out of the street. I usually found myself praying for those folks. Don't let your heart grow cold when it comes to giving. If you think about it, what you have is a blessing from God. We are just sharing it with others in need. Let your heart get warm by giving to the poor. One day it just might be you who will receive the blessing.

Application:

  • Personal Application: Continue spending time with the Lord daily. Sow righteousness and reap the fruit of God's unfailing love.
  • Family Devotional: Read this chapter to your family. Ask them if anything spoke to them as you read. Talk about their answers and show them that one important aspect of this chapter is that we must continue to spend time with the Lord and keep our hearts focused on His plans and purposes. Pray for them.
