Fridays with David

30 So David went up by the Ascent of theMount of Olives, and wept as he went up; and he had his head covered and went barefoot. And all the people who were with him covered their heads and went up, weeping as they went up. 31 Thensomeone told David, saying, “Ahithophel isamong the conspirators with Absalom.” And David said, “O Lord, I pray, turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness!”

David and his entourage have left the palace and moved beyond the city gates. His once strong capital now lays in uncertainty as David’s kingdom seems destined to belong to his rebellious son, Absalom. Who knows if David will ever return?
So where does a deposed king go? David has the answer, the people of Israel have always known in moments of crisis. He ascends up the mountain, the Mount of Olives, and there he will seek God’s aid.

David had authored many of the Psalms of Ascent, those that many a pilgrim would quote and sing as they climbed the mountain to Jerusalem. These great psalms underscore one’s hope in God and the desire for the refuge only God can provide. That’s what David needs, and he knows it well.

What about you? What mountain do you climb when your heart is breaking and you need new hope? You may not be within driving distance of David’s mountain, but you’re only a few important steps away from the God who can help. Run to Him, seek your hope in Him, for He is where your help comes from. God himself is the solution you seek.
