12 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Come up to Me on the mountain and be there; and I will give you tablets of stone, and the law and commandments which I have written, that you may teach them.”
13 So Moses arose with his assistant Joshua, and Moses went up to the mountain of God. 14 And he said to the elders, “Wait here for us until we come back to you. Indeed, Aaron and Hur are with you. If any man has a difficulty, let him go to them.” 15 Then Moses went up into the mountain, and a cloud covered the mountain.
Movies have portrayed this amazing moment in ominous ways, and yes, the giving of God’s law is one of the significant moments in human history. But tucked quietly in this story is the truth that God invites us to come to Him. He entreats Moses to “Come up to Me.” It’s an invitation more remarkable than we might perceive, but my guess is that Moses saw it clearly.
We serve a God who says, “Come to Me.” Do we recognize how amazing that invitation is or are we likely to take it for granted? You see, God is not just another name on your contact list. He is more awesome than that. But He is also One who invites you and I into His presence and wants us to come! No other religion speaks of their god like that.
Of course, the invitation demands a response. If God invites, what does it look like to reject the invitation? Imagine Moses saying, “No.” Of course, we can’t. He wouldn’t do that.
But we should remember that God has invited us to come to Him too. And if we don’t enter the open door He offers us each day, aren’t we making a mistake? It seems unfortunate for us to be too busy.
