7 Then he took the Book of the Covenant and read in the hearing of the people. And they said, “All that the Lord has said we will do, and be obedient.” 8 And Moses took the blood, sprinkled it on the people, and said, “This is the blood of the covenant which the Lord has made with you according to all these words.”
Often we can find that our pursuit of God has become a bit too focused on us. We search the Scriptures for what we think we need or engage a sermon with a “what’s in it for me” idea. But what does God want us to be getting out of His Word?
Jesus said that if we love Him, we will obey His commands. That’s not a difficult idea to understand, but how are we doing at living it? Are we looking to Scripture to find the path to obedience, or are we looking for things that might help our own path?
You see, the fundamental idea of following Jesus is that we are following Him—not hoping that He’s staying close to us as we go our own way. “To follow” means to give up on choosing our own path—to give up the right to choose our own way. When we follow Christ, we try to find out where He’s going and where He wants to lead us so we can…follow!
If we come to the Scriptures looking for what Jesus might say about our lives, perhaps we should shift our focus to finding the life He wants us to have. That’s when He truly becomes Master, or Lord, of our lives.
