Read Exodus 20:1-3 – And God spoke all these words, saying: “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. You shall have no other gods before Me... ” (NKJV)
It’s too easy for us to limit our thoughts of this command to stone images or carved totem pole looking ideas of other gods. Sure, ancient peoples look a bit foolish when we see them worshiping in such ridiculous ways. But that’s not the real point, is it? There are many other “gods” clamoring for our attention. And we discover their identities by looking at what we chase. We chase stuff to accumulate or popularity to gain. We chase positions of importance or a number of other self-focused agendas. These are the other “gods” at our disposal. And it’s amazing how easy it can be to put those pursuits ahead of our desires for God. Are we doing that? Maybe we can find our answer in the proofs we offer that God is first. How do we show that? What choices do we make that demonstrate God is at the top of our priorities? It’s a lot easier to drive the wrong gods off the throne of our lives if we take action to put the right God in that spot. If we put Him there, soon we’ll find these other priorities sliding into their proper places.
