Tuesdays with Jacob

Read Genesis 32:3-5 – Then Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother in the land of Seir, the country of Edom. And he commanded them, saying, “Speak thus to my lord Esau, ‘Thus your servant Jacob says: “I have dwelt with Laban and stayed there until now. I have oxen, donkeys, flocks, and male and female servants; and I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find favor in your sight.”’” (NKJV)

Solving one conflict often gives us the confidence to pursue others. That’s what Jacob does here. He finally broke free of the issues with Laban and is ready to reach out to his brother, Esau—the same brother he cheated two decades before. Perhaps Jacob is looking for somewhere to call home. After all, he has gone from his father’s house to his uncle’s house and never really established himself on his own. Of course, his culture would make such independence risky since other families might choose to attack him and carry off his wealth. Regardless, Jacob is in the mood to resolve past issues. That’s a good thing. If there are long-standing issues between you and a family member or former friend, isn’t it time to address those struggles? Jacob offers a good example for taking the initiative in resolving conflict. Though Jacob will become afraid that Esau may not be ready for such resolution, his effort opens a door that will bless him greatly.
