Fridays with David

Read 2 Samuel 9:6-7 – Now when Mephibosheth the son of Jonathan, the son of Saul, had come to David, he fell on his face and prostrated himself. Then David said, “Mephibosheth?” And he answered, “Here is your servant!” So David said to him, “Do not fear, for I will surely show you kindness for Jonathan your father’s sake, and will restore to you all the land of Saul your grandfather; and you shall eat bread at my table continually.” (NKJV)

Is there a connection between this choice and God’s decision to show Solomon kindness because of his father? Perhaps this effort finds its roots in near Eastern practice, but it seems significant that David treats Jonathan the same way that God ultimately treats David. Is this an example of how God blesses us according to how we bless others? If so, what an impressive reminder that we reap what we sow. Mephibosheth will need every ounce of David’s kindness, and Solomon will find a deep grace he doesn’t deserve coming from the God of his father David. So, what seeds of future blessing for you and your children are you sowing today? How can you treat those around you in a manner that might ultimately bless the generations to follow you? Don’t just live for today, but recognize that your path today may well be constructing a road your family will travel for generations.
