Read Genesis 11:4 – And they said, "Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower whose top is in the heavens; let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth." (NKJV)
These people were “concerned” about their city, but obviously there concern was selfish and egotistical. They wanted to make a name for themselves. They wanted to accomplish something significant to bring recognition to their city. Our prayers for our city should flow from the motive of wanting God to be glorified. The motive should be that God’s name would be known among the people. Pray for the city, but make sure your motive is that God would be exalted. It is not that your church would be “known” in the city, but that God would be known in your city. As you enter the New Year make prayer for your city a priority.
