Wednesdays with Moses

Read Exodus 12:40-42 – Now the sojourn of the children of Israel who lived in Egypt was four hundred and thirty years. And it came to pass at the end of the four hundred and thirty years—on that very same day—it came to pass that all the armies of the Lord went out from the land of Egypt. It is a night of solemn observance to the Lord for bringing them out of the land of Egypt. This is that night of theLord, a solemn observance for all the children of Israel throughout their generations. (NKJV)

How do you remember life’s big moments? There are occasions when we live a few days that are larger than we realize. Maybe our company reaches a new milestone or our child is the first in the family line to finish college. Of course, there are many important days that aren’t firsts, but they are huge for those who live them. For the Israelites, the move out of Egypt marked the end of 430 years in that land, most of it spent in slavery. Of course, none of those who followed Moses into the wilderness had lived the entire four centuries in Egypt, so this generation enjoyed a moment their ancestors only dreamed of. That makes such a moment bigger than they could fully appreciate. They celebrated, but they also were determined to preserve the memories of this day for future generations. I think that’s the main point here for us. How do we teach our children and grandchildren about the significant moments in our lives? Do we take steps so that they can appreciate where those before them have been and what great moments they have lived? Often history is a great teacher and an enormous asset to our faith.
