Thursdays with Joshua

Read Joshua 8:30-32 – Now Joshua built an altar to the Lord God of Israel in Mount Ebal,as Moses the servant of the Lord had commanded the children of Israel, as it is written in the Book of the Law of Moses: “an altar of whole stones over which no man has wielded an iron tool.” And they offered on it burnt offerings to the Lord, and sacrificed peace offerings. And there, in the presence of the children of Israel, he wrote on the stones a copy of the law of Moses, which he had written. (NKJV)

When God brings us a long-desired victory, how do we celebrate? For Joshua, the victory at Ai once again put him on top in the eyes of his people. But he celebrated that return to God’s blessing in a very important way—by renewing his commitment to obey God’s law. Most of us respond to God’s blessing with thanksgiving and a renewed enthusiasm in our trust in God, but do we think to recommit ourselves to obedience? When we offer such a response, we not only affirm that God has brought us to where we are, but we also show that we know the path to blessing runs through careful commitment to His commands. While we ought to renew our commitment to obedience every day, it seems critical that we at least reconnect with that choice when God has blessed us. If we don’t, soon enough we will find ourselves taking God and His blessings for granted.
