Wednesdays with Moses

Read Exodus 8:5-8 – Then the Lord spoke to Moses, “Say to Aaron, ‘Stretch out your hand with your rod over the streams, over the rivers, and over the ponds, and cause frogs to come up on the land of Egypt.’” So Aaron stretched out his hand over the waters of Egypt, and the frogs came up and covered the land of Egypt. And the magicians did so with their enchantments, and brought up frogs on the land of Egypt. Then Pharaoh called for Moses and Aaron, and said, “Entreat the Lord that He may take away the frogs from me and from my people; and I will let the people go, that they may sacrifice to the Lord.” (NKJV)

This may be one of the Bible’s funniest moments. Pharaoh has resisted believing in Moses’ God and has used the apparent wizardry of his magicians as his excuse. So when God sends frogs, Pharaoh’s guys manufacture a few frogs too. Seems the wiser move would have been for Pharaoh’s guys to get rid of the frogs. Instead they left their stubborn king with even more frogs to deal with. When we resist truth, we can look just as foolish. We think we’re winning, but if your lap is full of frogs, well, you don’t really look like a winner, do you? Pharaoh proves that anyone can make a mess, but you’ll need to humble yourself and seek God’s help if you’re going to clean it up.
