Wednesdays with Moses

Read Exodus 7:8-11 – Then the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying, “When Pharaoh speaks to you, saying, ‘Show a miracle for yourselves,’ then you shall say to Aaron, ‘Take your rod and cast it before Pharaoh, and let it become a serpent.’” So Moses and Aaron went in to Pharaoh, and they did so, just as the Lord commanded. And Aaron cast down his rod before Pharaoh and before his servants, and it became a serpent. But Pharaoh also called the wise men and the sorcerers; so the magicians of Egypt, they also did in like manner with their enchantments. (NKJV)

It’s interesting how people refuse to believe in God, even in the presence of a miracle. While we’re a bit unsure how Pharaoh’s magicians manufactured a similar miracle, the clear point is that faith doesn’t automatically generate from a “sign”. Jesus observed the same reality with many in His audience who were demanding a sign. We can be tempted to think that supernatural moments are the key to our efforts to win others or see our church grow—and certainly such moments are treasured and can create a stir. But, real faith doesn’t always follow. If people are determined to reject God, then even the miraculous won’t stir them. Pharaoh missed the presence of God clearly evident in the two Hebrews standing before him. He would not be turned from his “so what” attitude. Sadly, many in our lives may demonstrate that same level of unbelief.
