Read Joshua 3:5-6 – And Joshua said to the people, “Sanctify yourselves, for tomorrow the Lord will do wonders among you.” Then Joshua spoke to the priests, saying, “Take up the ark of the covenant and cross over before the people.” So they took up the ark of the covenant and went before the people. (NKJV)
Joshua’s command to the people is one we often fail to consider. Yes, God would do amazing things for Israel as they took possession of their Promised Land. But, Israel had to be prepared. They needed to receive God’s cleansing as preparation for God’s action. Like them, we are often anxious for God to act on our behalf, but how have we prepared our hearts for that action? Wouldn’t confession of sin and a desire to draw close to God be a good way to demonstrate faith in the God we want to act on our behalf? While we wait for God to move in our circumstances, we should give priority to becoming the people He wants us to be. Our faith is seen in how we act toward the God we hope will help us.
