Read Joshua 2:1-2 – Now Joshua the son of Nun sent out two men from Acacia Grove to spy secretly, saying, “Go, view the land, especially Jericho.” So they went, and came to the house of a harlot named Rahab, and lodged there. And it was told the king of Jericho, saying, “Behold, men have come here tonight from the children of Israel to search out the country.” (NKJV)
Given that the last spy mission the Israelites attempted ended in the people being afraid to enter their Promised Land, Joshua’s effort probably kept him on the edge of his seat. They didn’t need spies to help them discover that the city would be an enormous challenge. One could gain that perspective by just looking at the walls. Actually, this mission didn’t result in any battle strategy. It allowed the spies to hear how frightened the people of Jericho were of the approaching Israelites, and they did meet a woman who would put her trust in Israel’s God. These two bits of knowledge likely put Joshua over the top with confidence to trust God for the upcoming battle. Perhaps the best lesson for us here is that Joshua wasn’t afraid to trust God for big challenges. By sending the spies, Joshua proved his intent to attack and stepped over the proverbial line in the sand. He trusted God would give him the promised victory—and so can you.
