Read Deuteronomy 1:38-40 – “Joshua the son of Nun, who stands before you, he shall go in there. Encourage him, for he shall cause Israel to inherit it. ‘Moreover your little ones and your children, who you say will be victims, who today have no knowledge of good and evil, they shall go in there; to them I will give it, and they shall possess it. But as for you, turn and take your journey into the wilderness by the Way of the Red Sea.’” (NKJV)
God’s announcement of His judgment on Moses and the people for their failure to enter the Promised Land has an exception clause. Not everyone breathing the desert air will die in that wilderness. No, the little ones—those who are too young to be complicit in this lack of faith—shall enter the land of promise. And Joshua will lead them. That’s the group you want to be a part of—the ones who trust God for even the biggest challenges of life. These people of “childlike” faith live beyond the limitations that others cower behind. They experience God’s power in ways the doubting can never grasp. Joshua, and his friend Caleb, are men of faith. As such, they get to join a new generation in experiencing the promises of God. The lesson for us is clear. No matter how old we might be, we can share in God’s promises for a new generation if we will trust Him and join them in their faith for the future.
