Read 1 Samuel 17:45-47 – Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin. But I come to you in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the LORD will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you and take your head from you. And this day I will give the carcasses of the camp of the Philistines to the birds of the air and the wild beasts of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel. Then all this assembly shall know that the LORD does not save with sword and spear; for the battle is the LORD’s, and He will give you into our hands.” (NKJV)
I can imagine David’s speech to Goliath being one of the most pleasure-filled earthly moments Heaven ever saw. David’s words clearly proclaim God’s presence with Him and his absolute confidence that God supported his mission that day. The confidence of David’s words strikes me deeply. Who wouldn’t want to live with that kind of assuredness? Certainly David’s unlikely victory with a small stone makes a remarkable story, but his speech may be one of the greatest expressions of faith. We don’t often live with that same confidence. Do we think that God is less with us as we face our challenges? If we give our best to following His plan and trust Him with everything we are, we can trust that the Goliath-killing God we worship is at our side.
