Read Ecclesiastes 1:3-4 – What does man gain from all his labor at which he toils under the sun? Generations come and generations go, but the earth remains forever.
Solomon ponders several questions in the book of Ecclesiastes as he thought about life and its values. Men work and build cities, lakes and rivers but really can change nothing. Once they are gone from the earth everything will start to go back to the order that the Lord put in place at the beginning of time. We think that we have to leave something behind to make a statement about our lives. It will not be what we built or achieved that makes us successful. The best we can leave behind is a good name and friends and family whose lives were changed because we lived. It is most likely the only thing that will not change after we are gone.
