Hebrews 11:1

Scripture:

Hebrews 11:1 “Now, faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.” (ESV)

Observation:

As he sat in our men’s small group, he kept asking the same question. John had been a Christian for some time now but found himself with doubts. He kept asking the question, “How could God do this?” He shared with the group that his wife was fighting breast cancer and was in for many rough treatments. He wasn’t sure why God was allowing this and if he had the strength to carry on for her. The scripture from Hebrews speaks about faith and the assurance of “things hoped for” which we cannot seen. John needed his faith strengthened. Sharing with the group, he found encouragement. Many times, in a man’s life, his faith will be called into question. He may even cry out to God why. It is during these times that God’s Word, prayer and the support of godly men, will be so important in our life. In the “Unshakeable” lesson series found in the discipleship resources at men.ag.org, we can learn more about having unshakeable faith as we face trials and tribulations in our life. John and his wife got through her treatment and were able to share the Gospel with many others as they sat in waiting rooms and treatment rooms. Looking back John says that God had a plan. John just needed to be faithful!

Application:

  • Personal Application: Continue spending time with the Lord daily. Sow righteousness and reap the fruit of God's unfailing love.
  • Family Devotional: Read this chapter to your family. Ask them if anything spoke to them as you read. Talk about their answers and show them that one important aspect of this chapter is that we must continue to spend time with the Lord and keep our hearts focused on His plans and purposes. Pray for them.
