Fridays with David

32 Now it happened when David had come to the top of the mountain, where he worshiped God—there was Hushai the Archite coming to meet him with his robe torn and dust on his head. 33 David said to him, “If you go on with me, then you will become a burden to me.34 But if you return to the city, and say to Absalom, ‘I will be your servant, O king; as I wasyour father’s servant previously, so I will now also be your servant,’ then you may defeat the counsel of Ahithophel for me.

Hushai’s tears are doing David no good. While the king surely appreciated this man’s show of support and genuine love, David needs something more. He needs his friends to take action.
As men, we understand action. We struggle at times to manage the emotions of difficult moments, but give us something to do and we are more likely to work out those emotions in a way that feels productive.

There is a place for expressing sorrow and a time to take action. Perhaps the best part of this short story is that Hushai was capable of both. He wasn’t reluctant to demonstrate his love for David and sorrow for the lost kingdom, but he also stood ready to make a difference in whatever way his king might need. He’s a good model for us—the right blend of feeling and action, and that makes him especially useful to his king. That same blend will make you most useful to your king as well.
