16 Now the glory of the Lord rested on Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it six days. And on the seventh day He called to Moses out of the midst of the cloud. 17 The sight of the glory of the Lord was like a consuming fire on the top of the mountain in the eyes of the children of Israel. 18 So Moses went into the midst of the cloud and went up into the mountain. And Moses was on the mountain forty days and forty nights.
There’s something about getting alone with God that’s absolutely life-changing. Here, Moses is called up the mountain to meet with God in a way that would shape the world forever. As a result of this meeting, we would obtain God’s law—the foundation of law for many of the cultures that have dotted human history, including our own.
But every meeting with God isn’t designed to be world changing, just “us-changing.” Throughout the Bible, we are told that God desires to dwell with us. In fact, that’s what heaven is all about. It’s crazy to think that God’s idea of Heaven is hanging out with us, but that’s what He says He wants to do forever and ever!
Is that what we want too? How do our daily priorities reveal a desire to know and be with God? What steps would we be taking if our greatest desire was to be with Him? It seems odd that He wants that, while we’re often consumed with lesser, more temporary things.
One would think that we’d want to be with God even more than He wants to be with us, but I’m not sure that’s what our lives truly reflect. Perhaps we just need to think that through and reorder a few things so our lives make more sense.
