“You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.
In the preceding command, we are told to never shape any image as a representation of God. Now, God commands that we hold His name with reverence as well. While certainly using His name carelessly is covered here, there’s much more intended.
God’s name isn’t to be used for selfish purpose either. Some may use God’s name to manipulate others or borrow His authority for their own agendas. For Israel, their claim to relationship with God meant they might try to use His power or authority without the relationship He intended. Thinking God was their possession could only be true if they were obedient to Him and worshipped Him alone.
There are many applications of this command for us. We should be careful that we don’t misuse God’s name, such as carelessly saying, “God told me…” or “God wants us to…” Using God’s name for our own goals violates His righteousness, just as making an image of Him violates His greatness.
Proverbs 1:7 tells us that the “fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” When we understand who He really is and how worthy of our worship and awe He has shown himself to be, we cannot imagine trying to use Him or His name.
