Read Exodus 19:7-9 – So Moses came and called for the elders of the people, and laid before them all these words which the Lord commanded him. Then all the people answered together and said, “All that the Lord has spoken we will do.” So Moses brought back the words of the people to the Lord. And the Lord said to Moses, “Behold, I come to you in the thick cloud, that the people may hear when I speak with you, and believe you forever.” So Moses told the words of the people to the Lord. (NKJV)
“All that the Lord has spoken, we will do.” That’s quite a statement isn’t it? But it’s a decision that makes perfect sense given all that God had done for them. He demonstrated His power over Egypt in remarkable ways. Those actions clearly confirmed that He is God, but His rescue of them proved even more. He delivered them from their slavery and showed them that He wasn’t just God, but He was their God. He established His power for them and on their behalf. So, their response to His desire to give direction to their lives makes sense. God earned the right to more than just their obedience. As God, He could demand that. However, He also deserved their loyalty and their heart-felt worship because of what He had done for them. It’s the same for us, isn’t it? God’s call for our obedience to His Word and His ways isn’t just His effort to control us or the world, but through obedience, God has given us a way to demonstrate our relationship to Him. We obey because He is God, but also because He is our God and we enjoy relationship with Him. He has rescued us from sin and given us a new future. So we gladly worship Him with our words, our possessions and our choices.
