Read Exodus 14:21-25 – Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and all that night the Lord drove the sea back with a strong east wind and turned it into dry land. The waters were divided, and the Israelites went through the sea on dry ground, with a wall of water on their right and on their left. The Egyptians pursued them, and all Pharaoh’s horses and chariots and horsemen followed them into the sea. During the last watch of the night the Lord looked down from the pillar of fire and cloud at the Egyptian army and threw it into confusion. He jammed the wheels of their chariots so that they had difficulty driving. And the Egyptians said, “Let’s get away from the Israelites! The Lord is fighting for them against Egypt.” (NKJV)
How can you tell when God is fighting for you? It’s interesting to see that the Egyptians could tell they were on the wrong side of a battle with God. Now, Moses probably could sense it too. After all, a strong east wind began blowing after he raised his staff over the waters. And sure, the waves receding and the water piling up into walls would be a good clue too. But for us, we can’t always see such clear signs that God is with us and at work for us. We look for signs, but struggle to interpret slowly changing circumstances as God’s supernatural action. What should we look for? Maybe dry ground for our feet—a path clearly showing us the way we should go. Maybe the confusion or struggle of those who work against us could be a clue. We have His promises—maybe we should look more closely for the evidence that He is fulfilling them for us each day.
