Read Exodus 12:25-27 – “… It will come to pass when you come to the land which theLord will give you, just as He promised, that you shall keep this service. And it shall be, when your children say to you, ‘What do you mean by this service?’ that you shall say, ‘It is the Passover sacrifice of the Lord, who passed over the houses of the children of Israel in Egypt when He struck the Egyptians and delivered our households.’” (NKJV)
On several Scriptural occasions, God’s people are instructed to be prepared to explain key moments of their faith journey to their children. In this story, the Passover marks the night of their deliverance from Egypt, a key moment in Israel’s salvation history and one that God wants His people to celebrate annually. In this instance, the children will ask why mom and dad are doing that. That’s an important question. In our families, we influence most by what we are doing. By being obedient to God and demonstrating our faith in our actions, our children can ask this same question, “Why are you doing what you are doing?” Clearly, this offers a more powerful moment than just our words could bring. Actions speak louder than words. We want our children to learn what matters most by watching how we live so that our lives can show them the best way to live.
