Read Joshua 6:5 – “… It shall come to pass, when they make a long blast with the ram’s horn, and when you hear the sound of the trumpet, that all the people shall shout with a great shout; then the wall of the city will fall down flat. And the people shall go up every man straight before him.” (NKJV)
You’ve got to love this battle plan—unless you’re the one facing the battle. Hiking around the walls of a great city and then screaming and blowing trumpets hardly sounds like a plan to breach a monstrous fortress, but that’s the directive. And yet it makes perfect sense. How else would you celebrate the arrival of God’s power? Don’t a trumpet blast and a shout of praise seem like a good way to celebrate the presence of heaven’s armies on your side? In other places, the Bible reminds us that God inhabits our praise and that we should praise God in the midst of our greatest challenges. Why? Because the battle is one that He will fight for us, so our part is to celebrate His presence. It wasn’t the volume of their voices or the decibel-level achieved by the trumpets that brought down the walls of Jericho. It was the power of the God whose praises they were shouting.
