Wednesdays with Moses

Read Exodus 7:22-25 – Then the magicians of Egypt did so with their enchantments; and Pharaoh’s heart grew hard, and he did not heed them, as the Lord had said. And Pharaoh turned and went into his house. Neither was his heart moved by this. So all the Egyptians dug all around the river for water to drink, because they could not drink the water of the river. And seven days passed after the Lord had struck the river. (NKJV)

Stubbornness can cost you a lot. Unfortunately, the one who is stubborn is almost always among the last to recognize his obstinacy. Here, Pharaoh has watched Moses and Aaron’s God turn the waters of the Nile into blood. Still, he maintains his refusal to deal with them and his entire nation is affected. We know where this story is headed—to even greater destruction. And that’s the destination stubbornness often buys. When we refuse to relent, we would do well to take an accurate measure of the price others are paying for our resistance. Such thoughts may be the only way to steer us from a path that’s even more difficult.
