Read Joshua 2:22-24 – They departed and went to the mountain, and stayed there three days until the pursuers returned. The pursuers sought them all along the way, but did not find them. So the two men returned, descended from the mountain, and crossed over; and they came to Joshua the son of Nun, and told him all that had befallen them. And they said to Joshua, “Truly the Lord has delivered all the land into our hands, for indeed all the inhabitants of the country are fainthearted because of us.” (NKJV)
Things can look a lot different when we see them from someone else’s perspective. For Joshua and his people, life looked precarious as they were marching into unfamiliar territory with many battles to fight. Doubts, fears and lack of training all probably added to their anxiety. But when the spies saw their plight through the eyes of Rahab and the people of Jericho, things looked a lot different. The people in this powerful city could sense the presence of God with the Israelites and it was the people of Jericho who were afraid. One wonders what people see when they watch our lives. Do they see the fears that simmer within us, or do they recognize the presence of God in us and see that we are headed toward the kind of life they wish they could have?
