Thursdays with Joshua

Read Joshua 1:16-18 – So they answered Joshua, saying, “All that you command us we will do, and wherever you send us we will go. Just as we heeded Moses in all things, so we will heed you. Only the Lord your God be with you, as He was with Moses. Whoever rebels against your command and does not heed your words, in all that you command him, shall be put to death. Only be strong and of good courage.” (NKJV)

This is a critical moment in Joshua’s leadership. Will the people follow him? After all, he has been Moses’ aide for a while, but those wanting a new direction might be looking for a new regime. Wisely the people choose to follow Joshua. And their words to him are important. They tell him that they will follow Him as long as God is with him as He was with Moses. In other words, “Joshua, if you stay on God’s track, we’ll stay on yours.” That’s a pretty good attitude to take. Those we lead need to be able to respond to us with similar confidence. As husbands, dads, employers or whatever roles we fill, we must maintain a course toward God’s purposes so people can have confidence in following us. If we get off track, surely they would be wise to follow another way than ours.
