Read Exodus 3:5-6 – Then He said, “Do not draw near this place. Take your sandals off your feet, for the place where you stand is holy ground.” Moreover He said, “I am the God of your father—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look upon God. (NKJV)
It’s hard to miss the respect and humility demanded of Moses as he turned to see the burning bush. Shoes off, hidden face, afraid to look—these are descriptors of one who knows He is in God’s presence. Now God wanted Moses to come toward the bush. He wasn’t trying to “shoo” him away. But God, in His immense holiness, is worthy of worship and righteous fear. Sometimes, in our thoughts of God as a friend, we miss this reality. God is the Creator of the Universe and worthy of adoration and worship. We shouldn’t enter His presence carelessly or so casually that we lose sight of who He really is. Proverbs reminds us that the “fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” We must live every day with a keen sense that our Savior is God, and we are not.
