Read Matthew 6:14-15 – “For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.” (NKJV)
Jesus closes this short prayer by showing the role that forgiveness plays in answered prayer. Forgiveness is both vertical and horizontal. If we are not willing to forgive those who have wronged us, then we don’t understand the forgiveness that God has offered to us. We are trying to gain access to God through works and accomplishments. We must remember that God answers our prayers because of His grace and mercy, not because of our accomplishments. When we receive God’s grace and mercy, we should be willing to extend the same grace and mercy to those who have wronged us.
