The Prayer Life of a Working Man

Read Nehemiah 9:24-25 – So the people went in and possessed the land; You subdued before them the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, and gave them into their hands, with their kings and the people of the land, that they might do with them as they wished. And they took strong cities and a rich land, and possessed houses full of all goods, cisterns already dug, vineyards, olive groves, and fruit trees in abundance.  So they ate and were filled and grew fat, and delighted themselves in Your great goodness. (NKJV)

Nehemiah’s prayer is filled with thanksgiving to God for what He had done for the people. God “subdued” and “gave”, but also notice that the people “went, “took” and “possessed”. If you are familiar with the history of Israel’s possessing the Promise Land, you know they had to fight some difficult battles to obtain what God had promised. The working man realizes that just because he prayed about something does not mean he can sit around doing nothing. The working man prays and asks God for direction on what to do in each situation, then after the answer comes, he gives God the praise for what has happened.
