Read Nehemiah 9:1-3 – Now on the twenty-fourth day of this month the children of Israel were assembled with fasting, in sackcloth, and with dust on their heads. Then those of Israelite lineage separated themselves from all foreigners; and they stood and confessed their sins and the iniquities of their fathers. And they stood up in their place and read from the Book of the Law of the Lord their God for one-fourth of the day; and for another fourth they confessed and worshiped the Lord their God. (NKJV)
We have seen that most of Nehemiah’s praying was short prayers that he prayed during his daily activities. I refer to this as “lifestyle” praying. The passage we read today indicates an extended time of prayer. I call this “event” praying. Men need both kinds of praying. Just as Nehemiah set aside an extended period of time to pray and seek God, we periodically need to set aside some extended periods of time to pray and seek God. You can do this personally or invite other men to join you. Occasionally, turn the church’s “Men’s Breakfast” into a “Men’s Prayer Breakfast” and end it with an extended time of prayer.
