Controlling Our Speech and Words

HonorBound Devotion: March 25, 2010

Read James 1:26 – If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless.

The thought of putting horse reins on a man’s tongue is pretty graphic. A horse is a very powerful animal. They are controlled by the bridles put in their mouths. One would not think of a tongue as being so powerful. Yet, although it is small, the uncontrolled tongue does more to destroy relations, bring down churches and drive away the lost from the kingdom than any other device. The discipline of controlling our words is most important if we are to be used in the work of the Lord. Sometimes the best use of words is the ability to not speak at all.
