By Dr. Benjamin George
Many people ask themselves sometime or other in their lives, “What is the purpose of my life here in this world?” It is part of the process of growing up and that is why young people keep asking, “Who am I? Why am I here?” I have found my answer and it has satisfied me even though I have not been able to fulfill my purpose in life to the fullest yet. But, then, my life is not finished yet!
I hope that you have asked yourself the same question, “What is the purpose of my life here in this world?” and found a satisfying answer and a reason to live for. If not, today is your day!
Our Lord Jesus was sent to this world by the Father for a purpose and He was aware of His mission! He lived to fulfill that purpose of God and the prophecy concerning Him, “The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me, because the LORD has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn, and provide for those who grieve in Zion -- to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair” (Isa 61.1-3).
What Jesus did when He came into the world is plainly stated in the gospels. “God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him” (Act 10.38).
Jesus, before He went back to the Father, prayed in the company of His disciples. “Father, as you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world”. The purpose of your life and mine in this world as His followers is clearly established by Jesus here.
Dear believer, Jesus has 'sent you into the world' to do what He did while he was here - He helped people in many ways and communicated the good news of God's love. You and I need to get rid of our selfishness and deliberately begin to reach out to others who come in contact with us. Be friendly, good and helpful to every one. Pray for everyone and given the opportunity turn their thoughts to God. When people are going through difficult moments and despairing times it is easier to do it.
Pray and practise with me: Dear Lord, help me to fulfill Your purpose for my life each day. As 'light and salt' help me to touch peoples lives for good everyday. Amen.
BIBLE READING FOR TODAY JOHN 17
18 As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world.
19 For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified.
20 "My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message,
21 that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.
22 I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one:
23 I in them and you in me. May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.
24 "Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world.
25 "Righteous Father, though the world does not know you, I know you, and they know that you have sent me.
26 I have made you known to them, and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in them."
